Unethical marketing: Including cheap toys in food
It is very common to see kids with happy face when they have junk in their hands. They become more manageable as long as the junk pack lasts. It is also a proven fact that after that kids become more restless due to high sugar and junk. They are addictive too.
Once I asked a neighbor kid with huge pack of chips whether she knows it is bad for her. Her answer made me ponder a lot. She told me, "My mommy gave this and my mom never gives anything that is harmful to me". That's true, we never give harmful things to our kids but at first place we should know what is harmful.
I wonder why most of us can not think, without preservatives, food should go bad. Simple thumb rule will apply. If a packed food has longer shelf life, take it for granted, it has harmful chemicals as preservatives. The high fat, high sugar and fried things tend to get rancid and get spoiled in a short span of time without these preservatives. If you have doubts, try doing it yourself at home without preservatives.
Our FSSAI is busy making policies but I don't think they have courage to take steps on such unethical cheap marketing driven by only money. We need to be proactive and reject such advertisements and educate our kids. For that, it is necessary to have such information available for parents and schools. Many parents believe that what they say in adds are true and validated by bodies such as FSSAI while only bunch of us know the facts only when we apply proper logic.
In my opinion, imposing huge tax will not solve problem because we have people around us who think more expensive things are good for health, also a status symbol. If a pack of junk costs 500 bucks, I can vouch, people will ware it around their neck to show off while gobbling on them. That's not a joke, we already have such accessories available. You can ware a sugary drink and energy drinks and think your fashion is cool.
My humble request to parents and teachers, please save our kids from this unethical marketing. Stop believing that what they say in adds are true. Use your logic. Our last two generations of parents were very good but we are failing to realize the values of good food. more
