Update on Petition for Harsh Punishment for Child Rape

We are pleased to share with you that our total signatures on this petition have crossed 12,000 with over 10,500 offline and approximately 2000 online signatures. Volunteers in 15 states are taking signatures on the ground.

Two weeks ago, we met Minister of Women and Child Development Smt Maneka Gandhi. She has asked us to pursue the matter with the states and she will be discussing the same with the Hon'ble Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh whose minstry is responsible for amending POCSO law. We would like the POCSO law amended such that punishment for child rape is a minimum of life imprisonment without parole and awarded within 6 months.

You will be pleased to know that we have also met Delhi Commission of Women Chairperson and Delhi Assembly has resolved to propose death penalty for child rape and request a law amendment. If accepted by Central Government, that will make Delhi the 5th state to have harsh punishment for cases of child rape.

In addition, we have met Governor of Nagaland, Shri PB Acharya who has promised to take this up with Chief Minister Nagaland. We also met Member of Parliament Shri RP Sarmah who is very passionate about the cause. He will be taking up the issue in Assam, with the Hon'ble Home Minister and in monsoon session of the parliament. We will also be writing to all the Chief Ministers separately this week.

We continue to seek your help with the cause. You can help in following ways:
1) Help follow up with Chief Ministers
2) Help create awareness by reaching out to celebrities you may know
3) Help reaching out to Public Figures that you know.

Do let us know if you can by responding in comments and meanwhile share the link to the petition with all your contacts and let us spread the word to make this important change.

We already have a case on hand: Kathua (Jammu) rape case. An 8 year old child was kidnapped, sedated and raped for 4 days before being murdered. All because a section of Hindu's wanted to instill fear and evacuate the Bakherwal Muslim community. So now we have caste and religion instigated violence and murder and this is the result of a resurgent political party which is projecting that India belongs to Hindu's. The ghastly rape and murder accused also have a couple of policemen involved and naturally U.P Government being a Hindu Government would not want to punish the rapist Hindu and for that matter the Lawyers called a Bandh and blocked court not allowing its functioning. These criminal rapists who have tasted blood, won't they turn on any other small girl irrespective of their caste in future? If they rape a Judge's minor child or a Ministers daughter, they would then realize their folly but as a common man, I want all the 4 culprits to be either hanged in public or shot to death. Because of inactivity of Judiciary and the lengthy court proceedings, people in Andhra Pradesh have already started taking matters in their hand and punishing culprits by thrashing them in public. I am sure when matters go over head, even North will witness similar incidents of public justice. more
Unless Indian Law Commission step ahead and amend the IPC sections of Rape, Adultery, issue of Consent, Connivance etc., Exemptions , ; Sex Provocative Expressions, Exposures including Indecent Presentation of Women, Nation cannot see any controls in these issues more
Well done. But awarding of rarest of the rare punishment alone would not be able to eradicate the menace. We must make our girls well capable to fight to the last breath instead of surrendering at the first instance out of fear, educate people, have stringent restrictions on alcohol drinking and bring a social revolution against crimes like rape by publicising there against at every nooks and corners on continued basis, make the cops alert & dutiful and to act honestly and without prejudice, bring the political interference to 'nil' and most importantly, finalise all such cases expeditiously with a maximum time frame of less than a year. These lines of action would certainly bring down such incidents to the barest minimum if not to nil. more
what about politicians who rape, and suppressing rape cases in large in all over India. more
I fully agree with above all suggestions. But death penalty is not sufficient, the culprit must be cruelly punished with whipped with salt in public and this should be live telecast in all over India and in whole world. Not only raping for girl child, but raping done to mature women also punished like this, so that India becomes rape free nation, where in highest raping cases occurred compared to other nations of the world. It is very shameful for our country. this is because there is no severe laws for punishment, so that rapes can be prevented. more
I agree with all of the above. The fiend who rapes a little child, often a baby, destroying her inner organs, literally splitting her to death....should get only 6 MONTHS? You must be joking. The worst of mediaeval tortures would not be enough.... However, instantaneous death penalty at this point of time, would suffice. No hanging about for months and years...INSTANTANEOUS. Just he did not hesitate for a moment to grab and slake his lust on a little innocent unprotected child...the coward and the murderer. There should be no place in a civilised society for a depraved monster like him. We are too poor a country to spend years of free living and psycho-analysis and psychiatric treatment on vermin like these. Like vermin, they have to be ruthlessly despatched. more
