Vaccination against COVID-19
1. Two vaccines have been approved for experimental use. This means that people who are getting vaccinated are volunteers for large scale trial.
2. Why senior citizens and people above 45 with comorbidities were chosen as volunteers? The simple reason is they are of no use to country’s economy as they are not contributing to GDP anymore and are a burden on the society.
3. As soon as BJP came to power the first step was to reduce interest rate from 9.3% to 8.3% for Senior Citizens Savings Scheme 2004 which was started by previous government as a Welfare Scheme to provide a regular income stream to retirees from private sector who do not get pension.
4. As a further stabbing in the back of senior citizens the interest rate is further reduced to 7.4%. The contributions of senior citizens to Nation Building have been ignored.
5. As one more insult to injury senior citizens who managed to buy a home in a cooperative housing society have to pay 18% GST on their contributions towards common expenses of 7500 rupees and more. A Section 2(17)(e) was added to the CGST Act 2017 to get over High Court & Supreme Court orders that housing society is not a business entity and is run on concept of mutuality as a member can not provide services to himself. There was no Service Tax which is now subsumed in GST.
6. Therefore vaccinating senior citizens on priority is like killing two birds with one stone. Even if a few of them die due to vaccine trial it does not matter. At least it will prove efficacy of vaccines for young population. more
