Vehicle Scrappage Policy needs changes

The Government last year announced the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2021 which goes into effect in 2024. Many of you had expressed concerns with the policy as it imposes expensive fitness test and registration costs for continuing to use an older vehicle based on age. Below are the findings of the LocalCircles survey which has been disseminated by 100+ media outlets and digital platforms today.

The Govt should have separate policy for commercial vehicles and private vehicles. Commercial vehicles can be asked for testing even after 15 years but private vehicles should be allow to run for 20 years before asking for fitness test. After passing the fitness test, the vehicle should be allow to run further at least for 10 years more
Let us take the practical case. I am a Senior Citizen, bought a Car in 2014. Presently it has done around 40000 Km. It hardly runs for say 1000 Kms (Maximum) in a year. I am maintaining it properly. Car is a necessity for our personnel comfort. We can not travel in other mode of transport. Being Senior Citizen, we do not want to shell out 10 Lakhs for this. It is high time that Govt should have Kilometers done a criteria for Scrappage Policy. more
I Agree with all of the comments posted by Members of this esteemed Circle. Well done Local Circles for picking up this vital subject of discussion. We must make the government understand how arbitrary and wrong their scrappage policy is looking to the Citizens ... The Members have correctly pointed out so many valid grounds why this policy must be ammended. Not age but the fitness of the private vehicles should be the criteria for scrappage. For commercial vehicles the criteria should not be the same as for private vehicles. Please ensure this suggestion becomes known to the Authorities in power who are misguided. more
The time limit of 15 years for scrapping a vehicle is too arbitrary and without any study or foundation. Private vehicles are usually well maintained. As the maintenance and running costs are high these days, the motor vehicles for personal/family use can serve efficiently for long periods. The time limit for scraping a vehicle should be raised to 25 years. If the Government wants, the vehicle can be tested after 20 years. more
1. It is very expensive to buy a new vehicle in India. Mostly it becomes like a family member. 2. Hence Vehicle scrappage is NOT possible. 3. However if government provides new vehicle at the sale price of the old vehicle, only then Vehicles can be re purchased. 4. Clearly the government has NOT checked the AFFORDABILITY Criteria more
