Offlate, the Department of Weights and Measurements has not been seen working on the issue of Odd weights. The weights of packed goods, biscuits, Nutrition products and many more are packed in odd quantities, where the prices are not comparable and this leads to confusion and end up paying more for the Items. more
These all are the results of prevailing corruptions at all levels. There are no reasons to believe that the people in Weight & Measures or Metrology Departments are not aware of the manufacturers' mischievous and immoral acts of indirect increase of the prices of their products at regular intervals keeping the prices of the packages at the same level throwing dust in the eyes of the government and the consumers! Being consumers, we need to always remain alert and cautious and fight against all such evil designs of the manufacturers pointing out in every fora. more
The groups where the packaging is required in stand weights Like Biscuit, Bread, Edible Oil, Ceraeal & Pulses, Soap, detergent etc mentioned in second schedule of Legal Metrology act. The market across the country is flooded with packaged products in transparent polypacks without any mention of Weight and other statutory requirements but the department concerned are turning blind eye to such unfair trade practices and supporting to manufacturer/Traders etc. more
Yes, this is a very important issue the rules on which the trade and industry dilute to their advantage in mass violation to the disadvantage of consumers. The rules under W&M provide for goods packaged in standard quantities of 25 grams, 50 grams, 100 grams, 250 grams, 500 grams, 1000 grams/mls and the MRP mentioned accordingly. Now, to hoodwink consumers and to influence their psyche that there is no increase in the prices the manufacturers will reduce the weight with the same MRP. For example, recently I purchased packs of Anmol Dream biscuits originally with a weight of 100 grams at an MRP of Rs.10/- in line with other manufacturers years ago. But on the pack they used to say that it has extra 30% quantity which did not exceed the 100g. Slowly they reduced the weight to 84g but retained the price at Rs.10/- so that the consumers psychology does not react with agitation for the price rise as he just expends the same amount of Rs.10/- for a pack. Now this Anmol biscuitwalas have come out with another product 'Lemon Flavoured Sandwich' with allurement of 15% extra printed on it. As a label information on the packet the company states the net weight as "86.9g +13.1g Extra = 100g with the same MRP of Rs.10/-. As a ready reference I quote the detail: "Packed on 06.10.17, Lot No. NO610, Machine Code C2". Consumers will observe that after a laps of some time, the packet will reduce the weight to somewhere 86g with the same MRP of Rs.10/-. Even it could be reduced to 8-85g also but retain the same MRP, just to exploit the psychology of the buyer - of not counting the price in loose. Another related issue is "Buy one, get one free". Or, buy one Harpik bottle along with one or two additional packs of allied products or product of some other company within the same MRP as FREE. Meaning thereby that you, the buyer, is forced to buy what is not at all required. This element also shows, rather confirms, that the MRP is purposely kept at a high mark up enough to mislead the buyer into believing that they being offered additional products free of charge. Besides, I would say that this is devaluing the currency while keeping the inflation rising. In fact the Department of Weights & Measures in Consumer Affairs Ministry should hold a joint meeting with the trade and industry reps and consumer organisations where the State Depatments concerned should also be present and send out a message that violation of W&M rules for packaged commodities will not be tolerated. And, at the same time the State Governments should be goaded to get activated. more
I gather that some years ago the w & M act, the consumer acts were amended as a result of which the manufacturers are taking the benefit of beating the competition and increasing the prices by way of decreasing the weight without changing the price. We the consumers need to bring pressure on the government to make it mandatory to prescribe standard weights for packaging of goods so that a consumer can decide to buy an article after comparison. The local circles should take a lead & pressurize the government in taking action in the interests of the consumer. more
There are standards fixed for some items having more significance for general masses under second Schedule of packaged commodities rules under Legal Metrology act 2009 but the lack of enforcement is there which is an open secret. more
