What women say on violence against women and what remedy
The essays submitted by ten women were selected for award of prize.
Highlights of the views expressed by the participants and their recommendations are given below :
A clear trend evident :
Most cases of assault and other form of violence against women have been committed by those who are known to the victims and they may be relatives, neighbours, boy friends, acquaintances and in rare cases even teachers.
Many women suffer from eve teasing in the public places and in transport buses but they silently put up with the discomfort.
When such incidents happen, in most cases , the victims suffer within themselves and do not inform even their family members, unless it would reach intolerable level or result in serious physical harm.
In many cases, even if informed to the family members, they try to sort out the problem quietly, so that the reputation of the girl would not be affected.
Women should react :
In the case of any minor or major assault or eve teasing, the victim should boldly inform the parents, who should report the matter to the police.
Unfortunately, the image of police force is such that women and families think many many times before reporting the matter to the police ,fearing harassment and publicity.
It is necessary that the affected women and the families should develop courage and report to the police without hesitation, as non reporting would even cause greater damage to the safety of the victims.
There should be a central monitoring authority under the supervision of top woman police official in the police headquarters, who should constantly keep a watch on the complaints received from the harassed women in the police stations.. The victims should be asked to send copy of the complaint to the monitoring authority in the police headquarters also.
The offenders should know that the law would catch up with them and the victims and the police should ensure that this would happen.
Need for controlled anger :
The offenders are often emboldened, since in most cases women silently suffer due to fear and sense of shame. To tackle such situation, women should develop attributes for controlled anger, which is conspicuous by absence at present.
Women must equip themselves to exhibit such controlled anger against the offenders by learning self defence techniques like judo, karate or even keeping chilli spray bottle with them so that the offenders will be deterred ,without women themselves becoming offenders in the process of defending themselves. By learning these techniques , the victims can keep the offenders at bay, when there will be time for others to come to their rescue, hearing their call for help.
The development of quality of controlled anger by women will enable them to effectively rebuke the offenders and tackle their assault to some extent.
Awareness of such techniques also build the confidence level amongst women.
Are women too responsible to some extent ?:
There appear to be number of cases when young women fall into the trap of love tangle or develop acquaintance, due to their incapacity to assess the motives and real intentions of the men that they seek to befriend.
These days, one frequently hear about women attending parties with men in drunken state which invite trouble.
Further, in the name of modern living , women should avoid revealing attires that invite lustful attention of menfolk.
Women should certainly avoid developing drinking habits and refrain from the nauseating behavior of socializing beyond acceptable norm and should not indulge in what is known as “ live in relations”, which is now causing lot of social concern.
Any such behavior and safety needs of women cannot go together and are contradictory to each other.
Deteriorating social climate against women :
Cinema and television media are primarily responsible for picturing women as weak persons or objects of pleasure, which are contributing to increasing incidents of assault on women.
Several themes in films and serials show women being eve teased and then they succumbing themselves to the temptations on repeated approach by men.
While cinema and visual media are doing enough damage to the cause of women, the spread of internet, facebook, etc. have also contributed considerably to the deteriorating social climate.
Certainly, government should introduce strict censorship for cinemas and visual media and obscenity in social media with regard to the way the women are portrayed.
What influence of the family ?:
The collapse of the joint family system which resulted in the absence of elderly persons in the households and with both the parents being employed in many cases, a sort of vacuum is setting in the family structure, making the girls often live without sense of direction and guidance.
The elderly members with their rich experience can always see the writing on the wall and try to guide the youngsters in a healthy way.
The absence of elderly members in the households is proving costly.
Need lessons on culture and not sex education in schools :
Several educationists advocate that sex education is required in schools. However, it is extremely unlikely that this would improve the safety of women or create respect for women in any way.
Traditionally, women come to know about sex matters in the course of their upbringing in the families and there is no need to change this traditional method.
What is needed are classes that would promote cultural values , human dignity and responsible behavior between boys and girls in the schools. Atleast one hour should be spent in schools compulsorily for cultural education.
Assault on girl children :
One frequently hear these days on assault on young girl children, as young as six or seven years , by men.
Government of India has now introduced the law to award death sentence to the offenders. This is appropriate and the government should set up special courts all over India and post only women judges in the courts and should not permit adjournment of case or more than one appeal. In case of conviction, the offenders should be executed without loss of time and in any case ,within six months from the date of committing the offence.
This would be an effective deterrent that would go a long way in protecting the safety of young children.
Set up adult research and reform organization.
An independent body must be set up by concerned citizens to set up an organization that would counsel and advice the women victims. This organization should be supported by the government .
This should function like the well known organization Sneha, which is doing great service in counselling those with tendency to commit suicide and providing them hope and confidence.
