When will we get better service from Railways?

Railways remains a big concern for a common man. We have this very painful experience recently.

My son, his wife and 1 yr old baby booked seat in Vivek Express from Jammu to Ahmedabad one month before travel on 24th Dec. Got wait listed WL6/Gen and WL7/Gen . Before the chart preparation it was WL1/WL2. After chart preparation got one seat CNF (side upper) and one RAC. We cancelled the tickets as infant and mother unable to climb on side upper berth. Rs 130/- was deducted from the fare.

Janambhoomi Express Udhampur to Ahmedabad was showing 3 seats available in 2 AC. My son tried to book by entering "Book only if one lower seat is available". The system deducted the amount but didn't book as no lower seat was available. The deducted money is yet to be reimbursed.

He booked again in the same train 2 AC and got CNF one berth side upper and one berth middle upper. No change in status after the chart preparation.

When he traveled he saw vacant lower berths and requested TTE to allot at least one lower berth anywhere in the compartment but he declined due to non availability. They slept on the vacant lower berths which remained vacant throughout the whole journey.

In the return journey Ahmedabad to Jammu they got both berths side upper confirmed on "Jammu Tawi Express". He again cancelled those and booked direct flight Ahmedabad to Jammu by paying Rs 9000/-. Though he spent Rs 4000/- more but got hassle free booking and comfort of travel.

When railway is going to improve its services. Flights are far cheaper and you know what you are going to book.

Who is getting benefited by the quota system? The genuine travelers never get this. Won't you agree that mother with infant must get lower berths must have quota? Agents charge Rs 500 extra per ticket and can arrange confirmed booking one day prior to travel. They charge Rs 1000/- for the same day travel confirmation. How come? The Railways is know of it for sure.
What's this chart preparation? If seats/berths are available, show their position online. I can book only if it suits me. Or at least show how many lower and upper berths in one compartment are available under general quota. It can help passengers plan their travel. more

If there is a CBI enquiry on the Indian Railways, more than 90% of it's employees will be found corrupt!!! more
Railways playing hayrack with public without any accountability from their side. All the railway users unanimously raise one single voice to correct the government for user friendly policies and not fund raising policies. They should guarantee safety in the travel, clean coaches, schedule of trains, no entry to unreserved passengers into the coaches as part of TTEs responsibility as it was during 1950s and 1960s. Instead of that they are swindling money from the public under one pretext or the other. This should be opposed by one and all. more
Booking system needs to be more filtered and clear from railways. Still a lot of improvement needs to be done on paper as well as within the system. i have faced the situation even when there is the availability of seats more than 50 (in 3AC) and 100 (in sleeper class). more
Details of the available berths must be shown prior to payment and final booking. The present practice of not showing of these details prior to booking is a dishonest approach of the railways to earn additional income hoping that many of the passengers will opt for cancellation if the allotted berths do not suit them and the present charges of cancellation fee for confirmed tickets are substantial. more
