Here's a "copy and paste" from an item published by the TOI in their newsletter "The Coronavirus" yesterday....on the subject of re-infection (in Hong Kong)....for information: The first documented case of reinfection A Hong Kong man who was infected with Covid-19 in March and fully recovered has been reinfected more than four months later after a trip to Europe, a study by researchers at the University of Hong Kong, due to be published in journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, said. The sequence of events: The 33-year-old first tested positive for coronavirus through the RT-PCR method on March 26. He exhibited mild symptoms of cough, sore throat, fever and headache. On April 14, 19 days after his first test, he was discharged from the hospital after his samples tested negative twice in RT-PCR tests conducted 24 hours apart. On August 15, he was tested upon re-entry into Hong Kong from Spain via the United Kingdom. His sample tested positive. This time he was asymptomatic. The researchers sequenced the genome of his first and second infection and found that they did not match. The genome from the second infection showed a different strain, with 24 nucleotide differences. Nucleotides are the structural units that make up the RNA. This showed it was a case of reinfection and not one where the patient was a persistent carrier of the virus. Note: Such changes in the genome are not alarming; viruses (like any other organism) are continuously mutating, and the European strain was previously known. There have been previous anecdotal cases of supposed reinfection but they were largely attributed to false positives that sometimes occur in RT-PCR tests, when it detects fragments of the genetic material of the virus. Hong Kong's is the first documented case of reinfection. We don't know if this is an exception. Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organisation said, "we need to look at something like this at a population level". That the man was asymptomatic during the second infection, says Akiko Iwasaki, an immunology expert at Yale University, showed while his immunity was not able to block reinfection, it protected him from the disease. "This is no cause for alarm," she said. more
