Whither school education in Tamil Nadu ?

It is reported that more than one hundred government schools in Tamil Nadu do not have any student or less than ten students. Still, government of Tamil Nadu says that it would not close down the schools but ascertain the public opinion. What is there to ascertain when the situation is so clear.?

There is widespread feeling in Tamil Nadu amongst the parents, whether they belong to lower income group or higher income group, that the standards in the government schools and discipline level are very poor and the children would not be benefited by joining the government schools. The frequent agitation by the government school teachers , who resort to strikes, road blocks and other forms of demonstration demanding more salary , inspite of the very attractive salary they get at present, has completely spoiled the image of the government schools.

Sensing the mood of the people , private investors are seeing huge business opportunities in school education in Tamil Nadu.

When government schools are not attracting adequate number of students, private schools are springing up everywhere particularly in rural areas, largely run by politicians, traders and business men.

It is pathetic to see the plight of the poor families who want to provide good education to their children and want to admit their children in private schools but unable to find money to pay the exhorbitant fees. The conditions are extremely disturbing, particularly in rural areas and small villages where many poor families live below poverty line conditions.

There are schools which demand Rs., 10000 and more for LKG and Rs. 20,000 and more for even 7th standard. This condition is prevalent even in small villages. These private schools demand fee payment in one instalment and would not accept payment in instalments. Many of them insist on cash payment and will not accept cheques and many do not give proper receipts.

No government school teachers send their children to government schools. No government officials send their children to government schools.

The poor students are now left high and dry in Tamil Nadu.

How can poor families improve their conditions, if their children would not get quality education?

I appreciate your observations . I like you to correct yourself Mr .Mohari on the statement " neither I am happy with private schools where pressure are so much that kids even killed teachers in the past and will kill even in future. " It is always from the non private school where the students had killed in one instance and attempted in a couple . Don't send wrong messages without any backing . This doesn't mean I AM PROMOTING PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN TAMIL NADU . Government schools should gear up to the realistic level of standard for students and Teachers. more
Well, relocation is best, that gives a chance for a fresh start. As far as quality of education is concern, neither I am happy with private schools where pressure are so much that kids even killed teachers in the past and will kill even in future. Private school essentially make a student to go though the curriculum aiming for good scores. Even that culture is prevailing in many IIT, where even high score does not make them confident about a life as Engineer. What we need a complete review of our education systems and encourage kids to study in a smaller group with a common project which will them scope to think rather than mugging up various terminology with no motivation to understand physical and economic reality around them. We teach them world history as it is written by British and we never try to teach history of our 70 years independent India. Our evaluation of a student also goes back to British era far more friendly than what successful country such as China or France follows. In France getting a teaching job in primary school level is a rigorous exercise and all of them are government controlled. In contrast, primary school teaching job in india is not considered seriously. more
It is always better have a Public opinion such matters because no one knows on what basis these 100 Schools were opened initially . The orders come from above to open so many schools within a stipulated time . And it is opened in a mad rush . Only the local bodies and the public will be able to give the right information about the requirements of the requirement of the locality . Secondly these 100 schools may not have teachers at all or in adequate numbers . Some influenciel Head Master will be there still drawing salaries without students . more
Teachers can be contained if the DEO or such other authorities are made responsible for everything that is concerned in the schools under their jurisdiction. Something like vicarious responsibility. more
